Stephen - I have the Ferguson tips. Do you know what the difference is (shape whatever) between them and the Sullivan tip?
I am looking for the best cruise speed rather than control at low speed and would be interested if anyone has done a comparison.
I intend to modify the Fergusons - not real keen on the plywood end rib, and will try to fit a Univair rib instead. I would love to go with the Stewart tips but I have already spent a bit too much on STC's for other things, (skylight, fuel mod, left hand door etc) so the tips will have to wait.
Curly, the Sullivan wing tip is a Hoerner style and will screw directly on to a Ferguson extension (In fact, the Ferguson extension is the same, just different tips) and you should have a little less parasite and induced drag using the Sullivan tip. You should see some improvement, and it would be an easy installation. There is noting wrong with a wooden rig, except a little extra weight. I had to beef up the end rib and latter figured it would have been quicker to reinforce it with plywood.
As far as the Stewart tips...they sort of look like the originals..... You would lose lifting surface...I see no aerodynamic gain going from Fergusons or Sullivan's to a Stewart tip.
Stephen, Just get a set of Super Cub wings and bolt them on.
I know you are teasing...but, seriouly...it really is too much wing for our mission. We carry much more than SC's and fly faster. Expanding the wings out to 31 or 32 feet is about right for our planes. You get to keep the same struts and spars, you increase glide and cruise and lower stall....perfect!!! Except you don't get to keep those cute but, useless wing tip bows.
The Pacer project is back in Homer, AK. He made it home from Lopez Island, WA in two days of hard flying. The report is that he likes the modification and is relearning how to land. It has more glide!!! The cruise speed is about the same, since we went from 26" BW to 29" BW's, that makes sense. He's a happy Pacer owner ready to take his plane for hunting a nd fishing trips in the tundra.
I think that I saw somewhere on here someone said that they were around $900-$1000.00, Then you had to buy the rest of the parts, ribs, spar splice, trailing edge, covering etc. I just bought Josh Svenningson's wingtip STC for $250.00, that's the paperwork only. It uses 3 Dakota Cub ribs and the Dakota Cubs Tips. There tips are $265.00 a piece and are fiberglass, this STC also includes squaring off the en dof the Aileron, but it is pretty much the same wing extension usin Dakota Cub parts, which are fairly readily available.
Thanks nicka. I have not heard or seen of this mod. Do you any any more info/photos/contact details? Sounds interesting.
Does anyone have any comparison between the two mods?
Since reading Stephens posts re the Sullivan mod, I'm getting a little excited about extending the tips of my Pacer also...
They are $1525.00, but the kit is very complete. As I recall all you had to bring to the party was about a golf ball size glob of bondo and a little weld wire. I put them on my Clipper project (not flying yet). If i were to do it again I would look at the Sullivan Tips. I might still put on the Stewart to improve preformance and keep a close to original look. http://www.stewartsystems.aero/produ...f34a6f72d.aspx
