    Sutton Muffler Q

Is the Sutton Muffler considered an alternate means of compliance for the muffler inspection AD on the 150hp?

Yes. The Sutton exhaust would be subject to new inspection procedures and intervals outlined in the STC.

I don't think there is Sutton STC for a Pacer yet. A field approval is the last I heard.

    Dave,
In the event you're interested, here's a thread on the Sutton Exhaust:

    Curt, Thanks.

I ran a search for "Sutton" and when I read this thread I saw Stephen say, "The Sutton exhaust does not need the internal baffles check since there are none." But, the AD is to inspect every part of the muffler and exhaust system for weld failures and cracks. I don't want to spend all that money on a new system and still be required to continue with the 100-hour inspection.

The inspection for the Sutton exhaust is at annual and is easy, open the heat shroud and look for cracks, the rest is external. You do not need to unbolt the exhaust system and there is no 100 hr inspection.

Understand, Dave. Stephen is correct as for the inspection. When I accomplished my 337, I stated:
"THIS MODIFICATION RESULTS IN TERMINATING ACTION ALTERNATE MEANS OF COMPLIENCE TO AD 68-05-01 (EXHAUST INSPECTION), AND HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE SMALL AIRPLANE DIRECTORATE, ATLANTA AIRCRAFT CERTIFICATION OFFICE (ATTACHMENT)"
The STC includes a letter from the ATL-ACO, and the MEM-FSDO bought off on it. Appreciate that these exhausts are in essence the same ones used in the Grumman AA-5 series aircraft... nice and simple!
I had the approved 337 on the previous thread, but it appears to have dropped off during the new-format conversion. I'll check the 'chine at the house and repost it again if you would like to use it. Otherwise, give Brian or Dave a call @ Professional Pilots. They are quite the gentlemen and most helpful.

I have the Sutton Exhaust on my Pacer now for about three years and have had no problems with it. I had to get a field approval which took the FSDO over three weeks to sign off. But it was worth it.
